On the surface, the Goodman family may resemble any typical suburban American family. Dan serves as an architect, while Diana juggles everyday domestic chores and the rush of packing lunches. Their two teenagers are intelligent and quick with their quips, falling nothing short of their age stereotype. However, they are far from being a stereotypical family. Diana has been battling bipolar disorder and hallucinations for 16 years, a truth that has been kept within the family walls. The burden of hiding this reality threatens to disrupt the family’s unity. As they yearn to maintain an image of ‘normal,’ through medicines and various therapies, they stray farther away from their authentic selves.

Next to Normal, which has taken Broadway by storm, earning three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score, and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, is a story that shines a light on the struggles of a family dealing with mental health issues. Its focus on character development and the intimate portrayal of a sensitive theme resonates with its audience.

BoHo Theatre’s Brilliant Performance

BoHo Theatre concluded its 2016 season with Next to Normal. Fortunato’s direction prowess, which earned her a Jeff Award for her choreography in BoHo’s KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN and another nomination for directing BoHo’s PARADE, brought this production to life. Assisting her were Music Director Ellen K. Morris and Assistant Director Angela Alise Johnson.
