Next To Normal
Book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey
Music by Tom Kitt
Directed by Linda Fortunato
August 20 - October 9, 2016
presented at Theater Wit
From the outside, The Goodmans seem to be a normal, average American family. But for the past 16 years, perfect suburban mom Diana Goodman has been struggling with family trauma, bipolar disorder, and hallucinations. The strain of keeping this locked up tight within the family now threatens to tear them apart. Because the harder the family tries to be “normal”, the farther they move from being true to themselves. Next To Normal is a complex rock opera that confronts mental illness, the power of grief, and the struggles that hide beneath the veneer of suburban life. Having taken Broadway by storm (Next To Normal won three 2009 Tony Awards including Best Musical Score and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize), BoHo is eager to bring its trademark intimacy and focus on characters to this affecting and timely story.

"A warm and wise production... [with] stark but resonant staging... this production makes a good case that the show... deserves the kind of up-close look that the more-intimate environs of Theater Wit can offer." ★★★-1/2
"A breathtaking production... musical drama at its very finest... a grippingly honest lead performance from Colette Todd"
"Linda Fortunato has beautifully and fearlessly directed this flawless production... multi-layered, hard-hitting excellence... This is the part that Ms. Todd was born to play... This may well be the performance for which Donterrio Johnson will be remembered for years to come."
